Child soldiers fill a variety of roles, from taking part in hostilities to logistical and support functions. They may also be exploited in other ways, for example, as sex slaves. As highlighted in the Cape Town Principles, a set of recommendations for governments and communities adopted at an international symposium in 1997, the term child soldier does not only refer to a child who is carrying or has carried arms.
